Let Your Clients Know Why Good Design Is Worth The Investment

Many people perceive good web design differently, especially web designers and clients.

Clients usually want the “wow” factor or a design that pops which is usually a nightmare for web designers. Web designers usually prefer clean lines, less cluttered text and a curated colour palette because they knew these elements are the key to an effective and good design.

So how do we convince the clients that good design is worth the big investment?

1. Narrow The Educational Gap

The main problem here is to get your client to understand and appreciate the difference of having a good design and pay for it willingly.

Try to explain to your client that the success of a website is not determined only by its features and usability. It also comes from delighting your visitors. In today’s world with information overload and diminishing attention spans, most people will not be interested to find out more if you do not have a good design to begin with. All the copywriting and storytelling will go to waste. Visual elements work right off the bat and able to communicate quickly and concisely.

2. Bring In Examples

There are so many products that people are willing to pay a premium for. A common example is mobile phones. The fundamental purpose of mobile phone is to call and SMS. But there are so many brands with very different price tags. Other than Apple, most phones are running on Android and there are really very minimum difference between one Android phone to the other. How can some phones demand a higher price than the other and is more popular than the rest? Part of the reason is the exterior design and the UI design.

Visual appeal will set your client’s company apart from his or her competitors.

3. Ask Questions

Sometimes, it is hard to convince them to invest in good design, so we will need to find out his or her motivations in the first place.

To do that, we have to ask questions. Below are some questions that you can ask:

  • What is the purpose of this website creation?
  • What are the main messages that you want to convey from your website?
  • Out of all the main messages, which is the top 3?
  • What actions do you want the visitors to do after reading your website? Contact you? Click a link? Sign up?

Go through these intensive exercise and you will then be able to pitch to your client why good design will help to achieve all these.

4. Return On Investment (ROI) With Good Web Design

With all the above mentioned points, it is evident that good web design does help to increase the company’s revenue and reputation. If everything works out, your client will value and respect you. However, if the client still doesn’t value good web design, it might be wise to drop this client.

Good design is strategic, engaging, functional and impactful. It helps you to tell your brand story and stands out from the competition. Demonstrating that you value your brand by investing in good web design can pay significant dividends in the long run.

So, is it possible to have a successful company without a well-designed website? Yes, it’s possible. But is it worth the risk?
